How to check the word "eyelashes"?
In the word "eyelashes" many may suspect an unpronounceable consonant T (by analogy with the words "ladder", "contemporary", "messenger", "private", etc.). However, it is not there, so we are talking about a false-unpronounceable consonant. The difficulty lies in the fact that in modern Russian this spelling is unverifiable. Only etymological analysis provides indirect explanations. The word "eyelashes" is formed from the root -res- (it is in the word "cassock") and the suffix -nits-. As you can see, T is historically not visible.
The word Eyelashes turns out to be a feminine noun which is in the plural and in which we select the ending -Y: Eyelashes-Eyelashes-Eyelash.
The stress in it falls on the second syllable: eyelashes.
The root of the word turns out to be the morpheme EYELASH-: Cilium-Cilia.
Note that in this root there is an unstressed vowel E, and the word itself can be mistakenly written as an eyelash.
It is impossible to check the unstressed vowel in the word Eyelashes with a single root word, its spelling should be remembered.
In the ending after the consonant Ц, we write the vowel Ы, since the rule of writing ЦИ through И in the roots of words does not apply to this case.
In the word EYELASHES, you need to remember that there is no letter T between C and H, since students can write eyelashes by mistake. You also need to remember the spelling of the unstressed vowel E: ciliary, cilia.
At the end of a word in the ending of nouns, according to the rule, after Ts we write the letter Y: borders, fingers, birds.
